Desert Festival Jaisalmer has assumed the status of being one of the most important and popular events in the annual calendar. The golden city of Jaisalmer has its own unmistakable charm but it is increased manifold by the Desert Festival Jaisalmer. Held in the months of January-February and lasting for three days, the Desert Festival Jaisalmer is in essence a showcase of the regional performing arts.
Sponsored by the Rajasthan State Tourism Corporation, the Desert Festival Jaisalmer makes the otherwise barren land of Jaisalmer come alive to the melodious musical strains and hordes of colorfully attired people. The sands around Jaisalmer are splashed with vibrant hues and reverberates the sounds of music and the rhythms of the dance. The preparations of this festival are initiated well before the actual day with the dancers, musicians and performers from all over Rajasthan trooping in to the golden town of Jaisalmer.
There are a number of competitions and contests that make the Desert Festival Jaisalmer more exciting. The turban tying competition and Mr. Desert contests pack in fun and excitement. The camel races enliven the festival and the colorful craft bazaar set up especially for the festive purpose gives you an opportunity to splurge on shopping. You can pick up anything from embroidered skirts, hand woven shawls, wood and stone carvings, rugs, ethnic jewelry and leather bags. The performances of the folk artists against the enchanting backdrop of the Sam sand dunes are nothing short of a feast for the eye complete with all the glitters and the dazzles. The famous Gair dancers and the traditional fire dancers leave the crowd enchanted whenever they perform.
