Rajasthan Climate

The Rajasthan climate greatly varies according to the variation in the topography of the region. As Rajasthan has the Thar desert on its western part , the area is much drier and infertile. This part of Rajasthan has tropical or sub-tropical desert type of climate.

But the south eastern part of Rajasthan is much wetter, hilly and more fertile. The landlocked state is devoid of moderating influence of the sea.

The Rajasthan climate has winter temperatures ranging from 8° to 28° C and summer temperatures varying from 25° to 46° C .Rainfall also varies; while the western deserts has only 100 mm of rainfall annually, the southeastern part of the state receives 650 mm annually.

Four seasons: Pre-Monsoons, Monsoon, Post-Monsoon and Winter categorize the climate of Rajasthan .

Pre-monsoon,or summer which extends from April to June, is the hottest one , with temperatures soaring to 45oC and above in some places. In western Rajasthan the temperature may touch up to 48C, in the months of May and June. Only Mt Abu has much lower temperatures because of its altitiude. The desert regions experience noticeable dip in temperatures at night. There are dust storms as well.

The second season Monsoon or the rainy season continues from July to September here the temperature drops but high level of humidity makes the days very comfortable.

The Post-monsoon period extends from October to December. The average maximum temperature recorded is 33oC to 38oC, and the minimum is between 18oC and 20oC.

The fourth season is the winter or cold season, which extends from January to March. January is the coolest month here. Temperatures sometimes falls below 0oC in some cities of Rajasthan, like Churu. There are light rains in the north and north-eastern parts of Rajasthan at this time.

Rajasthan Climate is most pleasant and appropriate for a visit during the winter, which extends from December to March.
